Activity: Diurnal – active during the day, with peak activity in the cooler mornings and evenings.

Feeding Habits: Herbivores – primarily feed on grasses, aquatic plants, and shrubs. They are often found grazing in or near water.

Social Structure: Live in herds of 10–30 individuals, with males and females usually in separate groups except during the breeding season.

Hunting Approach: Spot-and-stalk method is effective, especially near water sources where they are commonly found grazing.

Habitat and Environment

Preferred Habitat: Wetlands, riverbanks, and savannas with abundant water and dense vegetation.

Water Sources: Always found near water – lakes, rivers, marshes, and swamps.

Best Hunting Locations: Look for them near rivers, lakes, and marshy areas where they graze on grasses and water plants.

Tracks and Trails: Cloven-hoofed tracks, often found near water and grazing areas.

Signs: Look for grazing signs in tall grasses, disturbed vegetation near water, and fresh droppings.

Hunting Time

Ideal Hunting Times: Early morning and late afternoon, when they are most active and grazing.

Breeding Season: Mating occurs year-round, but there is often a peak during the wet season (November–April). Males become more aggressive and territorial during the rut.

Trophy Quality: Males have thick, spiral horns that can grow up to 80–100 cm (31–39 inches). Look for large, symmetrical horns for the best trophy quality.

Use of Scent Lures: Not commonly used, but scent lures may attract males during the rut or when trying to locate them near water.
