Animal Behavior and Habits

Activity: Diurnal – primarily active during the day, with peak activity in the cooler morning and late afternoon.

Feeding Habits: Herbivores – feed on grasses, leaves, fruits, and shrubs. They prefer grasslands and wooded areas with good cover.

Social Structure: Live in herds of 10–20 individuals, with females and young in separate groups from mature males. Males are more solitary, especially outside of the breeding season.

Hunting Approach: Spot-and-stalk is the most effective method; look for them in areas with good cover, such as woodland or savanna near waterholes.

Habitat and Environment

Preferred Habitat: Wooded savannas, grasslands, and riverine forests with access to water and thick cover.

Water Sources: Found near rivers, streams, and waterholes.

Best Hunting Locations: Look for Sable in areas with a mix of open grasslands and thick bush or trees, especially near water sources.

Tracks and Trails: Cloven-hoofed tracks, often found in soft, sandy or grassy soils.

Signs: Look for fresh grazing areas, disturbed vegetation, and droppings near water sources or grazing spots.

Hunting Time

Ideal Hunting Times: Early morning and late afternoon, when they are most active.

Breeding Season: Mating occurs year-round but peaks during the rainy season (November–March). Males become more territorial and aggressive during this time.

Trophy Quality: Mature males have long, thick, and straight to slightly curved horns, which can reach up to 110 cm (43 inches) or more. Look for symmetrical, well-defined horns for the best trophy quality.

Use of Scent Lures: Scent lures are not typically used but may attract males during the rut, especially when targeting mature males.
