Animal Behavior and Habits

Activity: Diurnal – active during the day, with peak activity in the cooler mornings and evenings.

Feeding Habits: Herbivores – feed primarily on grasses, herbs, and shrubs. They prefer short, fresh grasses in open plains and savannas.

Social Structure: Live in herds of 10–30 individuals, with males and females often forming separate groups outside the breeding season.

Hunting Approach: Spot-and-stalk method works best, as they are often found in open grasslands or near water sources.

Habitat and Environment

Preferred Habitat: Open savannas, grasslands, and plains with scattered bushes or low trees.

Water Sources: Found near waterholes, rivers, and streams but can go without water for several days.

Best Hunting Locations: Open plains and grasslands, especially near waterholes or grazing areas.

Tracks and Trails: Cloven-hoofed tracks, typically in soft ground or sandy soils.

Signs: Look for fresh grazing areas, disturbed grasses, and droppings near water sources or grazing grounds.

Hunting Time

Ideal Hunting Times: Early morning and late afternoon when they are most active.

Breeding Season: Mating occurs year-round but peaks during the rainy season (November–April). Males may become more aggressive and territorial during this time.

Trophy Quality: Mature males have long, sharp horns that curve outward and then backward, often measuring 60–80 cm (24–31 inches) long. Look for thick, symmetrical horns for the best trophy quality.

Use of Scent Lures: Scent lures are not commonly used but may help attract males during the rut.
